What are translation issues?
Can you translate every word in a language into another language? Why do translations sometimes sound ‘odd’ even when the words individually are well translated? Are some things ‘untranslatable’? Why do subtitles sometimes omit parts of the dialogue? These are all questions that relate to translation. This course is about how we answer these questions. It is not an English course, although you might improve your English by using it regularly to discuss serious ideas. It IS a course in how to think about translation, and how to judge what is a good translation and what is a bad one.
