English class rules
This is a university, not a high school, so it’s your responsibility to behave like adults; My job is to help you learn, not to be a policeman.
It’s your responsibility to
- find out what the homework is, and do it on time. If you don’t do it, you won’t get enough points for a credit.
- bring your textbook, pen, paper, and dictionary (smartphone is OK) to every class.
- if you have to leave the room for the toilet or because you are sick, tell me before you go.
It’s also your responsibility to participate in the class and not to inconvenience other students.
This means
- don’t check your phone messages or websites during class. (You can use your phone for study, though).
- don’t sleep in class. If you’re too tired to talk, leave the room.
- speak English as much as you can, If you can’t think how to say what you want in English, say it in Japanese and then try to translate it (ask your group members, or me, to help)
- when you finish the task, don’t just chat with your friends in Japanese (and definitely don’t sleep!) Read the textbook, prepare for the test or presentation, start your homework, or chat in English. If you can’t think what to do, check the English 4B Moodle site for ideas.
Using your smartphone
You might be surprised to hear that you can use your smartphone in this class. This doesn’t mean that you can play games, or check your LINE, or surf the web. Your phone is an amazing resource for learning English, and I encourage you to use it as a dictionary, and for checking information that helps you in this class. The rules, though, are these:
- When you use your phone you should use ENGLISH sites only (or a dictionary site), and you should use it only for CLASS-RELATED things.
