I thought

Common errors – ‘I thought’

I learned about many new cultures. I thought that I couldn’t learn these in Japan.

At first I was nervous, but I tried to talk English everyday and bit-by-bit I got better. I thought that communication was very important.

‘I thought’ is PAST TENSE, so we use it to describe something you thought in the PAST, but probably do NOT think now.

For example,

I thought I couldn’t learn these in Japan, but now I know that I can/could.

I thought that communication was important but now I don’t think it’s important.

OR

I thought that communication was not important, but now i understand that it is.

For most errors like these, it’s best to simply not say, ‘I thought’. Like this:

I learned about many new cultures. I realised that I couldn’t learn these in Japan.

At first I was nervous, but I tried to talk English everyday and bit-by-bit I got better. I think  that Communication is very important.
